Champagne thief

Employees at the Coal Creek QFC, 6940 Coal Creek Parkway S.E., reported a man had stolen more than a $1,000 worth of champagne from a locked box just before 10 p.m. Dec. 15. Security cameras recorded part of the shoplifting. The man broke the wooden and Plexiglas case, causing $150 in damage, and stole two bottles of Veuve La Grande, together worth $360, and four bottles of Dom Perignon, together worth $680.

Home burglaries

A woman reported that her home, in the 11600 block of Southeast 77th Place, was burglarized between 8:30 a.m. and 1:40 p.m. Dec. 7. The burglar entered through the rear door of the home. The door jamb was shattered, causing $350 in damage; the door was damaged from prying, causing $250 in damage; and the rear screen door was scraped and gouged, causing $125 in damage. The woman reported the stolen items to be jewelry worth $6,000, liquor worth $1,000, $700 in cash, purses worth $300 and snowboarding equipment worth $500.

A man reported his home, in the 6900 block of 115th Place Southeast, was broken into between 6 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Dec. 8. The burglar had entered through a bedroom sliding glass window. The man reported the stolen items to be $1,100 in cash, a purse worth $1,400, a watch worth $100 and a passport.

Newport Hills to host holiday bazaar Saturday

The nearby Bellevue neighborhood of Newport Hills will host its holiday bazaar from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Dec. 18 at the site of the former Cy’s Hallmark and Newport Hills shopping center, 5620 119th Ave. S.E.

The event will feature merchants selling baked goods, jewelry, crafts, ornaments and other items.

Numerous Newcastle businesses and organizations will attend or contribute to the bazaar, including the Newcastle Weed Warriors, Newcastle Fruit & Produce and the Coal Creek Safeway.

Mail theft

A woman reported that mail had been stolen from her mailbox, in the 6800 block of Lake Washington Boulevard Southeast at about noon Oct. 30.

Tractor break-in

A man reported that his 2000 FRHT Tractor was broken into at Walkers Run Condominiums, 7453 Newcastle Golf Club Road, between 3 and 6 p.m. Nov. 18. He reported that the wing window of the tractor had been smashed, causing $300 in damage. He also reported that a cell phone worth $300 and a GPS worth $100 were stolen.

City encourages residents, business owners to report storm damage

City officials are encouraging residents and businesses to report damage from the recent wind and rain to King County.

To report damage, call the King County Office of Emergency Management at 206-296-3830 between 6:30 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday-Friday.

If you call to report damage, do so by Dec. 24 and ask to submit information to Individual Assistance, city officials said in a press release.

Newcastle Golf Club Road now open

Newcastle Golf Club Road — which closed Monday between 136th Avenue Southeast and 155th Avenue Southeast due to a landslide that extended to the road — opened to traffic in both directions Wednesday evening.

The road had been closed because a gas line runs through the area, and city maintenance workers, Puget Sound Energy workers and construction contractors dumped about 1,000 tons of rocks on the slope Tuesday to stabilize the hillside. Engineers cleared the road prior to its reopening.

Hazelwood Elementary students to perform in ‘The Nutcracker’

Hazelwood Elementary to host family movie night Friday

Hazelwood Elementary School will host a family movie night Dec. 10, showing the movie “Toy Story 3.”

Doors open at 6 p.m.; the movie begins at 6:30 p.m.

Free popcorn will be available to attendees, and Jamba Juice will be on hand selling smoothies. Holiday pies, wreaths and poinsettias will also be available for pick-up during the movie.

Open house for 116th sidewalks rescheduled for January

City officials have rescheduled the open house for residents to view the proposed sidewalk designs for 116th Avenue Southeast to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 10 in Hazelwood Elementary School’s gym, 7100 116th Ave. S.E.

The open house had been scheduled for Nov. 22 at Hazelwood, but was canceled due to snow and ice.

Sidewalks are to be built on 116th Avenue Southeast from Southeast 88th to Southeast 84th streets.

The City Council reviewed three design concepts for the project in August, and chose an option that calls for concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveway ramps and pedestrian ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Local actor channels bully in ‘A Christmas Story’
