Volksmarch comes to Newcastle Saturday

Volksmarch — a walk through Newcastle on trails, sidewalks and road shoulders — is from 9 a.m. – noon Sept. 25, starting at HomeStreet Bank, 6949 Coal Creek Parkway S.E.
Participants can walk a five- or 10-kilometer route, and both pass by Newcastle Historic Coal Miner’s Cemetery and through Lake Boren Park, the Eastside Fuchsia Society demonstration garden and part of the former Seattle-Walla Walla railroad route.
Cub Scout Pack 738 to host recruitment Friday

Newcastle-based Cub Scout Pack 738 will host a recruitment event at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 at Newcastle Elementary School’s multipurpose room.
Boys from first to fifth grade can join the pack, and many of the boys from the pack will attend to talk about their experiences as members. Parents from the pack will attend to answer parents’ questions and give details about the various aspects of the pack.

Shoplifter gets owned
Police responded to the Coal Creek Safeway, 6911 Coal Creek Parkway S.E., at 5:09 p.m. Sept. 6 when a man tried to walk out of the store with $187 worth of groceries for which he had not paid.
An employee, who recognized the man as a frequent shoplifter in the store, confronted him and told him to pay for his items. The employee followed him outside, but the man turned and tried to punch the employee with his fist.
KCLS prepares for Newcastle Library groundbreaking ceremony

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Newcastle Library will be at 3:45 p.m. Oct. 20 at the corner of 129th Avenue Southeast and Newcastle Way.
Those who attend will be treated to free food and drinks, and most likely music from a local band, said Julie Brand, King County Library System community relations and marketing director.
“We make it as much as a celebration as we possibly can,” she said.
Sahara Pizza to host fundraisers for F.E.T.C.H.

Sahara Pizza, 5625 119th Ave. S.E. in Newport Hills, will hold a fundraiser for the Newcastle group Friends Embracing the Canine Heart each Wednesday through Oct. 6.
Present a flier when you place a carryout order at the Newport Hills store and Sahara Pizza will donate $3 to F.E.T.C.H. to help fund an off-leash dog park in Newcastle.
