Newcastle Elementary School geography bee champ Nathan Jackson (left) qualified as a state semifinalist.
Newcastle Elementary School crowned fifth-grader Nathan Jackson as the school’s geography bee champion at the end of November.
The victory ensured Nathan an opportunity to take a written test, with a chance to qualify for the state championships. After taking the test, Nathan qualified as a state semifinalist.
He will compete in the state championship April 5 at Pacific Lutheran University.
Back in November, Jackson outlasted 10 of his classmates after he correctly identified Australia as the country where Fremantle Prison is located.
The state winner will receive $100, a copy of “The Complete National Geographic” on DVD and a trip to Washington D.C. where he or she will represent Washington in the national finals at the end of May. The first place national winner receives a $25,000 college scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to the Galapagos Islands.
