Renton superintendent named to Inslee’s administration

Renton School District Superintendent Mary Alice Heuschel will join Gov.-elect Jay Inslee’s administration as chief of staff when he takes office Jan. 16.

In a statement announcing her new position, Heuschel said that few opportunities could entice her from her current post, but the call to serve at the state level provides her an enormous opportunity to lead, impact public education and to help reform state government.

City sponsors food, gift drive to benefit Hopelink

Community members are invited to join city staff members in participating in a food and gift drive to benefit Hopelink, a local nonprofit organization that serves homeless and low-income families, children, seniors and people with disabilities.

Hopelink’s mission is to promote self-sufficiency for all community members.

The city will collect donations of nonperishable food and gifts for children and teens until Dec. 13.

Suggested gifts include warm clothing, batteries, preschool toys, children’s craft kits or art supplies, toy cars and children’s books.

Donations can be dropped off in bins just outside the elevators of City Hall, 12835 Newcastle Way, Suite 200.

Celebrate Bartell Drugs’ remodel with refreshments and music on Saturday

The Coal Creek Parkway Bartell Drugs will celebrate its dramatic remodel with a celebration from noon to 4 p.m. Nov. 24.

Shoppers can explore the store’s new interior with product offerings, bright new displays, decor accents and other improvements designed to enhance the total shopping experience.

Free grilled hot dogs will be served by the Bellevue Breakfast Rotary Club throughout the day. There will also be product sampling throughout the store including Cascade Ice and Lindt Chocolates.

The Salvation Army Brass Ensemble will perform live holiday music from 1 to 2:30 p.m.

City Council will hold final public hearing on 2013 preliminary budget

The Newcastle City Council will host the third and final public hearing about the 2013 preliminary budget at its regular meeting Nov. 20.

At the meeting, the City Council will continue to discuss the proposed 2013 preliminary budget, review a resolution to approve the Transportation Improvement Plan and review ordinances setting the property tax levy for 2013.

Newport Hills hosts holiday bazaar

The nearby Bellevue neighborhood of Newport Hills will host its annual holiday bazaar from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 17 at the site of the former Red Apple Market in the Newport Hills Shopping Center, 5606 119th Ave. S.E., Bellevue.

Shoppers can purchase goods, including jewelry, crafts and ornaments, from local artists and crafters.

Local organizations including the Newcastle Weed Warriors and the Friends of the Newcastle Library will also have information booths available. Read more

Rose Coulter Wisner

November 14, 2012

Rose Coulter Wisner was born Aug. 17, 1963, in Seattle, and died Nov. 9, 2012, at Evergreen Hospice in Kirkland.

Wife and mother of three, she was a dedicated volunteer at St. Madeleine Sophie Catholic School in Bellevue, St. Monica Parish School on Mercer Island, and a stalwart rider and fundraiser for the Northwest JDRF Ride-to-Cure Diabetes team.

She grew up the third of four children in Montesano, graduated Cum Laude from the Washington State University Edward R. Murrow College of Communications in Pullman in 1985, and worked as a writer and producer for KIRO-TV for 11 years.

Bellevue hosts open house to discuss new bridge on Coal Creek Parkway

Bellevue will hold an open house to discuss construction of a new bridge that will replace an aging culvert under Coal Creek Parkway.

The culvert is located between Southeast 60th Street and Forest Drive Southeast. The project will protect the roadway, improve public safety, provide a new pedestrian walkway and improve fish passage.

Construction is set to begin April 2013 and will require long-term lane closures on the road in 2013 and 2014. Read more

YMCA holds Thanksgiving food drive

The Coal Creek Family YMCA is hosting a Thanksgiving food drive to benefit families in the community.

Newcastle residents can help provide a wholesome, nutritious Thanksgiving meal for local families by dropping off nonperishable donations at the Coal Creek Family YMCA on Nov. 13 between 9-11 a.m. and 4-5:30 p.m.

The organization is seeking the following items: Canned fruit or vegetables, mashed potatoes, stuffing mix, canned cranberries, nonperishable pie crust and filling, Bisquick and Jam.

The Coal Creek Family YMCA is located at 13750 Newcastle Golf Club Road.
