Open house is Monday night for sidewalk designs for 116th Avenue Southeast

The city will hold an open house Nov. 22 for residents to view the proposed sidewalk designs for 116th Avenue Southeast from Southeast 88th to Southeast 84th streets.
The open house will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Hazelwood Elementary School’s gym, 7100 116th Ave. S.E.
The City Council reviewed three design concepts for the project in August, and chose an option that calls for concrete sidewalks, curbs, gutters, driveway ramps and pedestrian ramps compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

Mailbox tinkerings
A woman reported that the lock on her mailbox, in the 8000 block of 144th Avenue Southeast, had been damaged between 5 p.m. Oct. 26 and 5 p.m. Oct. 27. The damage was estimated at $30.
A woman reported that the lock on her mailbox, in the 8300 block of 144th Avenue Southeast, had been tampered with between 2:30 p.m. Oct. 25 and 2:30 p.m. Oct. 27. There was no visible damage.
Liberty students expelled for buying, selling marijuana on campus

A Liberty High School student was arrested and expelled for selling marijuana to another student in the school’s bathroom Oct. 25.
The student who purchased the marijuana was also expelled.
The transaction was discovered after the school security officer discovered the students walking down a trail behind the school during lunch. They ran from the officer, and one of the students later admitted to buying the drugs.
Newcastle state Senate race appears headed for recount

The last undecided race to represent Newcastle in Olympia appears to be headed for a recount.
State Sen. Randy Gordon trailed challenger Steve Litzow by more than 1,000 votes in the days after the Nov. 2 election. In the 15 days since the campaign ended, the gap between the Democrat Gordon and Republican Litzow has slimmed to 142 votes.
Under state law, a machine recount is required if the difference between the candidates is less than 2,000 votes and also less than one-half of 1 percent of the total number of votes cast for both candidates.
Weed Warriors holds holiday card contest

The Newcastle Weed Warriors are searching for art to include in an electronic holiday card this year. Drawings, paintings, photos, Photoshop creations or anything else will be accepted, according to the Weed Warriors’ website.
The Weed Warriors will e-mail a card with the winning art to friends, families, businesses and environmental stewardship groups. The winner will also receive a $20 gift certificate to Sweet Decadence.
E-mail submissions to Weed Warriors founder Grace Stiller at gracestiller@comcast.net by Nov. 27. Submitted art should be generic and applicable to all winter holidays. Themes that highlight environmental issues are appreciated.

Council to continue budget amendments, address property taxes Nov. 23

The City Council will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. Nov. 23 in the Council Chambers, 13020 Newcastle Way, to continue making amendments to the 2011 preliminary budget and decide whether to increase property taxes next year.
The council began making amendments to the budget and held its final public hearing on the matter at its Nov. 16 meeting.
At the Nov. 16 meeting, the council voted to add $62,000 for parks maintenance next year, reduce funding for A Regional Coalition for Housing to $10,000 from $26,000, eliminate the $166,000 skate park project scheduled to be funded in 2012 and change city staff merit raises into noncompounding bonuses.

Red Cross urges preparedness after windstorm, earthquake

After a windstorm Monday night and a magnitude 4.2 earthquake Tuesday morning, the local Red Cross chapter reminds residents to take steps to prepare for severe weather and other emergencies.
“The windstorm and earthquake are good reminders that some basic preparation and common-sense safety tips will help ensure safety during disasters like these,” Susan Pelaez, director of preparedness and community engagement for the local Red Cross chapter, said in a statement. “We know that there is more rain forecasted for Wednesday so it is important to prepare now. This is also a good time to make sure that you have your disaster kit in place.”
