Newcastle police join summer DUI crackdown

Newcastle police and more than 100 other law enforcement agencies started a statewide crackdown on drunken driving last week, as part of the largest-ever summer DUI enforcement push.

The extra patrols — part of the Drive Hammered, Get Nailed campaign — continue through Sept. 6. The campaign started Aug. 12.

The state experiences the greatest number of alcohol- or drug-impaired driver-involved traffic deaths between July and September. In order to combat the problem, 178 agencies statewide signed on to the Drive Hammered, Get Nailed effort from the state Traffic Safety Commission.

Local Massage Envy to donate proceeds to fight breast cancer

Massage Envy, which has a location at 6920 Coal Creek Parkway S.E., will host Massage for the Cure Sept. 14, donating $15 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure from each $49 one-hour massage that day.

The business will begin taking reservations Saturday for the Sept. 14 massages.

Massage for the Cure will take place at every Massage Envy location across the country.

Council could select city manager Monday

The Golf Club at Newcastle, 15500 Six Penny Lane, will host a public reception with its final four city manager candidates from 6-8 p.m. Sunday at the Wooly Toad Bar.

The City Council and an 11-member citizen panel will interview the four candidates privately Monday morning at The Golf Club, and the City Council will hold a special meeting at 2:30 p.m. in the Muirfield Room, at which time it may select the new city manager.

The City Council and the citizen panel will interview the candidates for an hour each in separate rooms, and Payroll & Accounting Specialist Maria Lindberg will give each a tour of the city and introduce him to the city staff.

State Rep. Judy Clibborn earns top honors from construction group

The statewide trade association for the commercial construction industry has named state Rep. Judy Clibborn as Legislator of the Year.

Clibborn, a four-term Democrat and former Mercer Island mayor, represents Talus, southwest Issaquah and Cougar Mountain communities as part of the 41st Legislative District.

Gene Colin, government affairs council chairman for Associated General Contractors, said Clibborn “gets it.”

“She understands that an efficient and adequate transportation system is good for the economy and the environment,” Colin said in a news release.

A woman reported that five outgoing checks were stolen from her mailbox, in the 13000 block of Southeast 95th Way, between 9 a.m. July 16 and 9 a.m. July 19. A suspect altered a check for $28 and cashed it for $480.
