City investigates proposal to install off-leash dog park

Newcastle City Council members voted unanimously to investigate possible solutions to the lack of an off-leash dog park in the city at their meeting Tuesday night.

The direction to the city’s parks and recreation department to research the issue grew amid resident concerns over leash laws that will begin to be enforced in coming weeks.

Dogs must be on leashes within the city. To date, city officials and police haven’t enforced the laws.

The announcement came in response to limited incidents of off-leash dogs at Lake Boren Park, city officials said.

Newcastle Elementary School’s sustainability programs win state award

Newcastle Elementary School was the recipient of a $300 grant from the state Department of Ecology given today.

The annual Terry Husseman School Awards program recognizes and rewards schools for their commitment to ongoing sustainable programs, including waste-reduction efforts, creating new environmental awareness programs, and developing and implementing innovative curricula, a press release said.

Newcastle is one of 45 public and private schools from the state to win an award ranging between $150 and $3,150. More than 70 applications were received.
