The Newcastle City Council sent a letter of condolence to the Lakewood City Council following the Nov. 29 slayings of Lakewood police officers Mark Renninger, Ronald Owens, Tina Griswold and Greg Richards. The letter reads:

“Dear Mayor Richardson and City Councilors:

“Our hearts go out to your city, your gallant officers, their grieving families, your staff and you as you cope with your epic tragedy. The brutal insanity that occurred last Sunday is incomprehensible.

“We can empathize with how disturbed your community must be feeling, and — like you — look upon our own police officers with renewed respect and caring concern. We send you our deepest condolences and wish for all of you the restoration of peace and trust.”

The city lost one of its own officers in a shooting in 2002 when Ronald Matthews killed King County Sheriff’s Deputy Richard Herzog. Matthews was convicted of aggravated first-degree murder and was sentenced to life in prison.
