The Renton School Board is looking for a new member to represent Newcastle and surrounding communities, after board member Marcie Maxwell won election to the Legislature.

Maxwell tendered her resignation at the Dec. 10 school board meeting to devote time to her new job. Her resignation from the school board is effective Jan. 8. The Legislature convenes Jan. 12.

Renton School Board president Al Talley said the board would move to fill the position of the one year left in Maxwell’s four-year term. The person would then have to run for election in November.

Application packets are due by 5 p.m. Jan. 9. Interviews will be scheduled for the following week.

Those interested in applying for the position must live within District 5, which includes Newcastle, Newport Hills and Renton neighborhoods north of Northeast Sunset Boulevard. Applicants must also be a U.S. citizen and be registered to vote within the Renton School District boundaries.
