Questions needed for Newcastle candidate forum

Meet the men and women vying for Newcastle City Council spots at an October candidate forum.

The Newcastle Chamber of Commerce and the Newcastle Library are jointly hosting a moderated forum Oct. 7 at the Newcastle Library, 12901 Newcastle Way.

The event will feature questions submitted by Newcastle citizens. Candidates for Position Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 are expected to attend.

There are four Newcastle City Council seats with expiring terms, but only one race includes more than a single candidate. Read more

Lake Washington Boulevard blocked

A broken-down semitruck and trailer is causing delays on Lake Washington Boulevard.

The truck, which has a large crane on the top, is stalled at the hairpin turn on Lake Washington Boulevard between Denny’s and the Newcastle Shell Station.

The road was partially blocked with traffic control as of 4 p.m. Thursday, according to an e-news blast from the city.

It will be fully blocked later tonight though, between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. as workers clear the roadway.

The city says to avoid the area, if possible.

Brown Bear to offer free car washes Aug. 27

Brown Bear Car Wash celebrates its 58th anniversary with free car washes Aug. 27

Brown Bear will give away free “Beary Clean” car washes at 21 of its automated “tunnel wash” locations in the Puget Sound area.

For the past nine years, the Seattle-based, family-owned Brown Bear has provided more than 225,000 free washes on the company’s anniversary and Veterans Day. Last year’s anniversary event generated 26,437 complimentary washes.

Packed Aug. 18 council meeting includes Energize Eastside presentations

If you want to get a seat at Tuesday’s Newcastle City Council meeting, you better get there early.

Puget Sound Energy’s Energize Eastside project is on the Aug. 18 agenda, and whenever that’s the case, it always draws a large crowd.

Puget Sound Energy and the Coalition of Eastside Neighborhoods for Sensible Energy will both give presentations about the proposed plans to include a new electric substation and higher capacity transmission lines through Newcastle, Redmond, Bellevue, Renton and Kirkland.

Those presentations begin at 6 p.m., an hour before the regular council meeting begins. Read more
