Liberty baseball team makes state’s final four and other high-school sports notes

Something special is brewing on the Liberty baseball diamond.
The Patriots are in the state’s final four, after a weekend in which they eliminated Tumwater and then North Kitsap at Centralia’s Wheeler Field May 23.
Nate Steffens threw a complete game shutout, while Torey Anderson collected three hits to propel the Patriots to a 3-0 win over Tumwater. The Thunderbirds came into the contest with a 16-6 record and consistently found themselves in the top 10 of state rankings.
Liberty continued to stun spectators with a 4-3 come-from-behind win over North Kitsap. Read more
Energize Eastside scoping meeting comes to Newcastle May 28

The fourth of five Energize Eastside scoping meetings comes to Newcastle Thursday night.
The meetings are a part of the Energize Eastside Environmental Impact Statement, a legally mandated process that will critically evaluate potential significant environmental impacts associated with the project and project alternatives.
It began in earnest this month with a 45-day comment period, highlighted by five community scoping meetings where residents are invited to share their thoughts about Energize Eastside.
“I view it as one of the most, if not the most, critical projects on the radar for Newcastle,” said Tim McHarg, Newcastle’s director of community development. “So we’re hoping that a broad cross-section of folks will come and attend.” Read more
Renton teachers to hold after-school walkout Thursday

Renton School District teachers will join colleagues across the state in protesting lawmakers’ failure to fully fund public education, but they’ll do it outside of regular school hours.
The district announced today that teachers voted to hold an after-school one-day walkout May 28.
“Teachers in the Renton School District are dedicated to the success of every student. They display that dedication every day in every classroom, and they did so again when union leaders from every school voted to hold one-day walkouts at a time that doesn’t affect classroom learning,” the district said in a statement.
Teachers and supporters will gather at the intersection of Rainier Avenue and Airport Way and the intersection of Rainier Avenue and Grady Way to wave signs at about 3 p.m. Thursday. Read more
