Renton superintendent resigns

The Renton School District is back on the market for a new district leader.
Less than two years after she took office, Superintendent Merri Rieger announced her resignation, and the Renton School Board accepted it at its May 13 meeting.
Rieger’s resignation is effective June 30. In order to ensure a smooth transition for the interim superintendent, Rieger will step aside from the daily superintendent duties immediately, according to a statement from the district. Read more
Candidate filings set up two council races

Current and former commissioners from both the Planning and Community Activities commissions will go head-to-head in this fall’s Newcastle City Council election.
Community Activities Commissioners Linda Newing and Victoria Sandoval both filed to run for council Position No. 1, currently held by Councilwoman Lisa Jensen who announced she would not file for re-election.
Current Planning Commissioner Allen Dauterman and Rob Lemmon, a former commissioner who resigned in December, both filed for Position No. 3. Mayor Steve Buri announced earlier that he would not file to retain his seat.
The terms of Positions No. 2 and 4 are also set to expire at the end of the year. Incumbents Gordon Bisset and Carol Simpson announced they will both run to keep their seats. Neither council member drew a challenger. Read more

What will the city of Newcastle look like 20 years from now?
Will the city’s downtown core grow? What will happen with Lake Boren? How will neighborhoods and the general populace change?
No one knows for sure how the city will transform two decades from now, but current Newcastle residents have the opportunity to contribute their vision of the city’s future as the City Council puts the finishing touches on an update to the Comprehensive Plan.
The Comprehensive Plan, dubbed Newcastle 2035, is a document that outlines the city’s vision and goals for the future. Read more
Hazen, Liberty soccer teams get to state

The Hazen High School boys soccer team is back in the state tournament, and boy, did they earn it.
The Highlanders endured three loser-out games in just five days to qualify for the 3A state playoffs, defeating Prairie, Capital and Shelton in the District 3/4 tournament.
“There is a lot of pressure playing one loser out game,” Hazen head coach Ken Matthews said in a news release. “Imagine what the guys have been going through playing three in five days. It wasn’t easy but they got to The Dance.”
Hazen earned a matchup against KingCo Conference foe Interlake in the first round of the state playoffs. They play the Saints 7:30 p.m. May 19 at Interlake High School. Read more
