Local cat lovers can get their feline fix at the Cedar River Rascals 4-H cat show fundraiser 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 16, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church.

Cat Project members ages 5-18 from King and nearby counties will put their skills and knowledge to the test in Fitting & Showing, Type (breed) and Cage Decoration show categories. Members of the club’s Poultry and Rabbit projects will be onsite with their animals. Admission is free. Concessions will be available and a raffle will be held.

“Our show is a fun, low-key way for the kids to gain experience showing their cats in a busy environment prior to the county and state fairs,” Cedar River Rascals parent, and Newport Hills resident, Heidi Dean said in a statement. “It’s also a great opportunity for local kids and parents to inquire about our club and about 4-H in general. 4-H is a wonderful organization.”

Holy Cross Lutheran Church is at 4315 129th Place S.E., Bellevue.

NEW — 4:25 p.m. May 13, 2015

Issaquah students will not have class May 19, as district teachers join the statewide protest decrying the lack of legislative action to fully fund basic education.

Issaquah School District Superintendent Ron Thiele announced the one-day walkout in an email May 13, adding that a make-up day will be added to the end of the school year.

Before-school activities are canceled May 19, but after-school activities, including sports, will continue as usual. Schedules for state assessments underway will be adjusted at the school level, Thiele said.

The superintendent added that he could not “endorse” the walkout, and he regretted the “negative impact” to district students and families. Read more

City, county commemorate National Police Week

NEW — 3:15 p.m. May 12, 2015

The Metropolitan King County Council and Newcastle Mayor Steve Buri joined municipalities across the country in recognizing National Police Week.

National Police Week, May 10-16, recognizes the men and women of law enforcement who have fallen in the line of duty.

The city of Newcastle understands the weight of those sacrifices more than most, after King County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Richard Herzog lost his life protecting the citizens of Newcastle June 2, 2002.
“It is always an honor to recognize and remember those that have fallen in the line of duty,” King County Councilman Reagan Dunn said in a statement.

“I want to thank Mayor Buri, the City Council and all of the residents of Newcastle for continuing to honor the memory and sacrifice of Deputy Herzog.” Read more
