Hazelwood PTSA offering college scholarships

The Hazelwood Elementary School PTSA is offering two $1,000 college scholarships to graduating high-school seniors who attended the Newcastle primary school.

Former Mustangs who are part of the class of 2015 and hold at least a 3.0 grade point average are eligible to apply for the awards. The $1,000 scholarships are applied toward the winners’ first-year tuition at any accredited university.

Required application materials, due April 17, include a high-school transcript, letter of recommendation and more.

Application materials are available here and in the counseling offices at Hazen, Lindbergh, Newport and Renton high schools.

Local legislators to host town-hall meeting March 14

Residents can join local legislators to discuss the ongoing session in Olympia at a town hall meeting in Bellevue this Saturday.

Meet state Sen. Steve Litzow and state Reps. Judy Clibborn and Tana Senn — 41st Legislative District lawmakers — at the March 14 meeting.

The legislators, all three from Mercer Island, will provide an update on the legislative session and take questions from constituents.

Litzow, Clibborn and Senn will visit Bellevue’s Somerset Elementary School, 14100 Somerset Blvd., from 10 a.m. to noon. Read more

Waste Management’s David Della to speak at chamber luncheon

The Newcastle Chamber of Commerce will host Waste Management at its March luncheon.

David Della, Waste Management’s public sector manager for the region, will talk about the company’s public outreach efforts. Waste Management is responsible for collecting the Newcastle community’s waste every week.

The company is a regular sponsor of Newcastle Chamber and city of Newcastle events. Most recently, Della awarded the Newcastle Chamber Diamond Award trophy for Education to Margaret Strong.

The March luncheon begins at 11 a.m. March 11 at Tapatio Mexican Grill. The cost is $20 for chamber members and $25 for non-members.
