Newcastle Diamond Awards ceremony is Thursday

The Golf Club at Newcastle will literally roll out the red carpet for the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce’s Diamond Awards Nov. 20.

This will be the second year the Diamond Awards ceremony takes place in the evening at the golf course. Based on last year’s event, the chamber board determined that it would continue with the evening time frame and format in 2014.

The Newcastle Diamond Awards is an annual ceremony that recognizes community members who do good things in the greater Newcastle area. The recipient of a Diamond Award is chosen based on his or her contribution to the community.

Winners and nominees demonstrate dedication, integrity and caring, with a passion for doing what needs to be done. Read more

Friends group hosts Nov. 15 book sale

The Friends of the Newcastle Library will host a mini book sale Nov. 15.

The group will take over the library lobby, where it will sell hundreds of books for all ages in a wide-ranging selection of genres, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The Newcastle Library is at 12901 Newcastle Way.

The group sponsors additional library programs through its book sales. It gladly accepts donations of gently used books throughout the year. Bring them to the library’s front desk.

Newport Woods community concerned about proposed development

Newcastle resident Rick Bell is questioning his commitment to the city of Newcastle for the first time.

The longtime Newport Woods resident is an active community member, who donates much of his free time cleaning up city parks and trails with the Weed Warriors organization. He poured thousands of dollars into remodeling his Newcastle home, rather than buying a new one, because, as he puts it, “We love the people and the quietness of the location.”

But a proposed multifamily, mixed-use development along Newcastle Way, just beside City Hall, has him and his neighbors wondering how much longer the city will remain the quaint Newcastle they fell in love with.

“We’re not against development,” he said. “But we never thought it would be a monster like this.”
