They relied on everything that the surrounding nature and forests had to offer.
Newcastle resident Reed Ingalls will share his knowledge of nutrient rich edible plants found in local forests and fields in a 10 a.m. June 21 presentation at the Newcastle Library, 12901 Newcastle Way.
Ingalls, an avid hiker and backpacker, is the Weed Warriors’ secretary, and is a team member with the National Wildlife Federation’s effort to certify Newcastle as a Wildlife Habitat Community.

A 23-year-old Renton man will be charged in connection with eight car prowls and one shed break-in that occurred in Newcastle May 30-June 2, according to a statement from Newcastle Police Chief Melinda Irvine.
Detective Christy Marsalisi caught the man when an observant employee saw him checking vehicles in a business parking lot, Irvine said.
“He later confessed to additional crimes,” she said. “In his confession, the man told us he threw some items he did not want in the bushes.”

Liberty basketball team hosts 3-on-3 tourney June 14

The Liberty High School boys basketball team played its final minute of the season in February, but the work never stops for the Patriots, who have a busy summer on tap.
Liberty’s long list of summer events began May 30 with its first golf fundraiser at Renton’s Maplewood Golf Course. More than 130 people attended the golf tournament, which also included a banquet and silent auction.
Assistant coach Steve Kelley, a former Seattle Times columnist, was the banquet’s master of ceremonies, while former Seahawks Mack Strong and Paul Moyer were special guest speakers.
“I was so thankful for everybody’s generosity,” Liberty basketball coach Omar Parker said. “I looked out at all the people there to support Liberty basketball, and I got a little emotional.” Read more

Joe Heslet, general manager of Issaquah Press Inc., will speak at the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce’s June 11 luncheon.
Heslet oversees operations of The Issaquah Press, Sammamish Review, SnoValley Star and Newcastle News. He will talk about how to create advertising retention with top-of-mind awareness.
Before joining Issaquah Press Inc. in October 2013, some of his more noteworthy career experiences include his tenure as director of sales and advertising at the Puget Sound Business Journal, general sales manager for Fisher Communications’ KOMO and KVI stations, and founding and leading his own research firm.
