City hosts health care insurance enrollment event

Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, Newcastle residents who don’t have health insurance can now enroll in affordable health insurance options online at www.wahealthplanfinder.org.
Still, enrolling might seem daunting for anyone who doesn’t have good internet access, or who doesn’t feel comfortable signing up using a website.
That’s why the city of Newcastle and Public Health — Seattle & King County have teamed up for an in-person enrollment event from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 26 at Newcastle City Hall, 12835 Newcastle Way, Suite 200.
King County Public Health’s Washington Healthplanfinder is a part of the county’s effort to ensure all residents who are newly eligible for health coverage are enrolled. Read more
Annual town hall meeting is tonight

The city of Newcastle will host its annual town hall meeting from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 22 at The Golf Club at Newcastle.
While past events have focused on city finances, this year, attendees can expect to hear about a slew of projects that mean a great deal to Newcastle’s future.
Development of the Mutual Materials site, potential plans for Lake Boren Park improvements and a presentation about Newcastle 2035, the city’s Comprehensive Plan, are all on the agenda for the meeting.
Residents will have an opportunity to offer their thoughts on those topics and, ask their own questions of the council and staff. The city will again use pulse pads to gauge audience opinion.
Prior to the 7 p.m. meeting, locals can meet with City Council at a 6 p.m. social. Complimentary refreshments and snacks will be provided.
Union reaches agreement hours before grocery strike

Just two hours before grocery store workers were set to head to the picket lines, union representatives announced they had reached a tentative agreement with the national grocery chains.
“This tentative agreement has been unanimously recommended by the union member bargaining team,” the union wrote in a statement posted on its Facebook page.
Union members must still review and vote on the proposal. Until then, the statement said details of the agreement will not be released.
The workers were opposed to employer proposals that would stop health care coverage for employees who work less than 30 hours a week, deny workers paid sick days and cut pay, including for those who work on holidays. Read more
