UPDATED — 3:45 p.m. Sept. 20, 2013

Edit: Unfortunately, it looks like the Community Faire has been postponed due to weather. Follow the Newport Hills Community Club on Facebook for the latest event updates.

The Newport Hills community will host its second Community Faire from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 21.

“A lot of Park in the Parking Lot,” is the theme of this year’s event and will be held at the Stods Baseball parking lot, 5629 119th Ave. S.E.

More than 30 handmade craft vendors will sell their goods at the event. There will also be food, kid-friendly activities and live music.

Students from the Cornerstone Dance Studio will perform, and the Newport High School robotics team will provide demonstrations.

The event will also include garden-centric activities, providing a nod to Newport Hills’ orchard history with an apple cider press, apple bobbing and more.

NEW — 2:50 p.m. Sept. 18, 2013

The city of Newcastle’s volunteer Planning Commission is reaching out to residents for feedback as it looks to update the city’s Comprehensive Plan.

The Comprehensive Plan, effectively rebranded as Newcastle 2035 for the remainder of the update, is a document that outlines the city’s vision and goals for the future.

Residents can offer their opinions about the city’s future, and what they would like to see in the next 20 years in an online survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DCGR99P.

A statute requires cities to update their comprehensive plans by June 2015. Newcastle last completed its Growth Management Act-mandated update in 2003.

Lake Boren Park, budget and more on Sept. 17 City Council agenda

September 16, 2013

NEW — 1:10 p.m. Sept. 16, 2013

The Newcastle City Council will meet to review plans for potential Lake Boren Park improvements prior to their regular Sept. 17 meeting.

The City Council directed staff to brainstorm future plans for the park, and the staff will present that information at a 6 p.m. study session.

Budget season is fast approaching, so the council will review a 2014 budget calendar during the general meeting that begins at 7 p.m.

Mayor Rich Crispo is also expected to give an update on where the city stands with the Newcastle Historical Society. In August, the City Council reviewed an ordinance that would incorporate the Newcastle Historical Society into the city’s operations as an official standing committee, though no action was taken.
