Mercer Island Councilmember Tana Senn likely to be tapped for state rep next week

Washington’s newest state lawmaker is likely to be Mercer Island City Councilmember Tana Senn, who likely will be appointed to the state House next week.
A Metropolitan King County Council committee unanimously voted this week to send Senn’s nomination to the full council on Monday, spokesman Al Sanders said. She had been the top choice of local Democratic Party officials to fill a vacancy created by former state Rep. Marcie Maxwell’s decision to join Gov. Jay Inslee’s education team.
If the selection is formalized, it will mark a quick political ascension for Senn, a 42-year-old consultant who work for a national Jewish women’s organization before coming to the Seattle area about a decade ago. Read more
Eastside Select Baseball hosts tryouts

Eastside Select Baseball is holding open tryouts for its 12 and under team at 6:15 p.m. Sept. 11
In addition to league competition during the season, the team will play in six tournaments, including a few out of town. The team provides winter training at state-of-the-art facility, Big League Edge.
The tryouts will be held at Big League Edge, 501 42nd St. N.W., Suite 300, Auburn.

Newcastle Historical Society hosts September talks

Newcastle residents can learn more about the city’s past, with a free series of September presentations hosted by the Newcastle Historical Society at the Newcastle Library.
The historical group will present three programs that will give residents insight into the city’s former coal production, the people that made up what was once the second largest town in the state and the story of the Newcastle Historic Cemetery.
All free presentations begin at 7 p.m. at the Newcastle Library, 12901 Newcastle Way.
“People do have a genuine interest in this community and some of its past,” said Russ Segner, president of the Newcastle Historical Society.
The first seminar is a Sept. 5 discussion, “The Coal Mines of Newcastle,” led by Segner. Read more
