The Newcastle Chamber of Commerce will host Robin Callahan, executive director of the Issaquah Schools Foundation, at its Aug. 14 luncheon.

Callahan will discuss the power of small business investment in public education.

“I think it’s important that local communities learn about the many ways we see business invest in our schools, and the successful partnerships that result,” she said.

The Issaquah Schools Foundation is a nonprofit organization that drives resources to help students achieve the promise of their academic potential. Read more

Prepare for weekend closures on I-405

The Washington State Department of Transportation is warning drivers to prepare for weekend closures on Interstate 405.

The ramp from northbound state Route 167 to northbound Interstate 405 in Renton and northbound I-405 through Bellevue will shut down starting the evening of Aug. 9 for critical repairs and maintenance work.

Both sections of highway will close at 10 p.m. Friday. Crews will begin reopening northbound I-405 at 4 a.m. Monday, Aug. 12. All lanes and ramps, including the state Route 167 ramp, will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday. This work is weather dependent.

All lanes of northbound I-405 from Southeast Eighth Street to state Route 520, as well as the eastbound and westbound I-90 ramps to northbound I-405 will be closed. Read more

Register for the Newcastle 5K Run/Walk

Registration for the Newcastle 5K Run/Walk for Education is open.

The 3.1-mile course snakes through a mix of trails and paved roads through Newcastle parks and byways.

The 5K begins at 9 a.m. Sept. 8 at Lake Boren Park. For those who want to participate with strollers, or leashed dogs, there will be a staggered start at 9:15 a.m.

Registration for the regular 5K costs $25 per person, or $20 through group-registration. High school students can enter for $15. Runners can participate in the new 1K Kids Dash for $10. Fees will increase after Aug. 15. Read more

Voters approve park bond, narrow contenders for November election

King County voters approved the park bond by a large margin and narrowed the field for the general election this November.

Votes will still be counted until the Aug. 20 certification, but as of the night of Aug. 6, the park bond passed with 68.9 percent of the vote.

For the owner of a $600,000 home, it will bring a tax increase from $79.86 per year to $112.62 per year, a 41 percent change. The levy will raise $60.7 million in 2014 which will be used for open space preservation, trail building and park improvements. Read more
