New leadership coming to Hazen High School

Randy Taylor will take over as Hazen High School’s interim principal for the 2013-2014 school year, replacing John Kniseley, who accepted a position at Kentwood High School.
Taylor most recently served as principal of Mount Si High School for six years, and also spent five years as the Auburn High School principal.
He holds master’s degrees in education and school administration from Central Washington University. In 2003, the Washington Library Media Association named Taylor the High School Principal of the Year.
The Association of Washington Secondary School Principals also named him the Washington State Regional Distinguished Principal in 1998 and 2009. Read more
Simultaneous closure of state Route 520 and northbound I-405 is this weekend

A packed weekend is planned on the Eastside for crews working on critical maintenance and preservation projects on state Route 520 and Interstate 405.
From 10 p.m. July 12 to 5 a.m. July 14, crews will close all northbound lanes of I-405 through downtown Bellevue for concrete panel replacement. Crews will also close the 520 floating bridge for its annual inspection, and culvert installation.
The state Department of Transportation is asking drivers to plan ahead and help reduce congestion by taking transit, carpooling, using alternate routes or delaying trips.
Drivers should plan for congestion, particularly on Interstate 90 near the detour routes, westbound state Route 520 approaching I-405, and northbound I-405 where all drivers must exit at Southeast Eighth Street.
Newcastle Historical Society hosts guest speaker at July 11 meeting

The Newcastle Historical Society will host Marilyn Clise at its July 11 meeting.
Clise’s bloodlines are steeped with Newcastle history. Her great-grandfather came to Newcastle in 1870 and went on to serve in the second legislature of the state of Washington.
His son, and Clise’s grandfather, John Henry, was born in Newcastle and went on to become the Renton pioneer that inspired McKnight Middle School’s name.
Clise is expected speak for about 30 minutes.

Marcie Maxwell takes position with state office

State Rep. Marcie Maxwell announced her resignation from elected office today to accept a position with the state’s Legislative Affairs and Policy Office.
Maxwell will join the state office as the senior education policy adviser in July.
“I’ve been honored to serve the people of the 41st District in South and East King County, and believe that my new position in the governor’s office will continue my work on their priorities for our state,” Maxwell said in a statement. Read more
Massage Envy salutes community heroes

Puget Sound-area Massage Envy centers will salute first responders with the “Thanking our Community Heroes” program beginning July 15.
During the five-day promotion, police officers, firefighters and emergency medical technicians actively employed in the line of duty are invited to receive one free hourlong therapeutic massage session.
The free massage sessions are by appointment only and participants are encouraged to book as soon as possible as the spots fill up fast. Make a reservation by calling the Newcastle Massage Envy at 957-7979.
Each clinic will also host a teddy bear drive to collect cuddly friends to help comfort children in trauma situations. All teddy bears collected will be donated to fire stations, police stations and hospitals within the community. Donations must be brand new and no bigger than 12 inches. Read more
Newcastle bank robberies connected to series of incidents

Detectives from the King County Sheriff’s Office, Seattle Police Department and the FBI’s Safe Streets Task Force are investigating a series of five armed, takeover-style bank robberies, two of which occurred in Newcastle.
