Stay cool as the temperature rises this week
June 28, 2013
NEW — 5:35 p.m. June 28, 2013
The mercury could reach 90 degrees in the days ahead, and as temperatures rise, so do the risks for heat exhaustion and heat stroke.
State public health officials recommend people seeking relief from high temperatures to visit air-conditioned places, such as public libraries, shopping malls or movie theaters. Even a few hours spent in air conditioning can help people stay cooler once they get back into the heat.
State Department of Health officials remind people to stay indoors and in air-conditioned environments as much as possible, and to drink plenty of fluids — but not beverages containing alcohol, caffeine or a lot of sugar.
For residents headed outside in the heat, plan strenuous outdoor activities for early or late in the day, before the temperature rises. Remember to take frequent breaks when working outdoors. Read more

Friends group hosts evening of cookies and conversation
June 24, 2013
NEW — 1 p.m. June 24, 2013
The Friends of the Newcastle Library will host an evening of cookies and conversation at its June 26 meeting.
The informal social gathering will allow visitors an opportunity to share ideas for future programs, and offer suggestions about ways the Friends group can enhance the library experience.
A Newcastle librarian will make a brief presentation, and the Friends group will spend a few minutes completing routine business, prior to the social.
“The main event is getting to know our members,” Friends group secretary Sue Beverly wrote in an email.
The two-hour event begins at 7 p.m. June 26 at the Newcastle Library, 12901 Newcastle Way. Learn more about the Friends group at www.facebook.com/FriendsOfNewcastleLibrary.
