Registration open for summer sports camps

Newcastle will facilitate Skyhawks sports camps this summer for children ages 4-12.
From July 2 to Aug. 17, beginner to intermediate players can develop their skills in soccer, basketball, golf, tennis, flag football or cheerleading.
Two to three sports are incorporated into the multisport program and for the mini-hawk program, youths learn the essentials of baseball, basketball and soccer.
Camps will be held at Lake Boren Park or other local parks and facilities. Registrations are offered on a first-come, first-served basis until the program is full, up to seven days before the start date.
Skyhawks is a nationwide organization established in 1970. Its goal is to teach life skills through sports.

Chamber sets date for 2013 Diamond Awards

King County hosts transportation town hall tonight

The public is invited to an open house and town hall meeting June 19 with elected leaders from cities and the county to learn more about critical infrastructure needs for roads, bridges, highways and transit service.
The state Legislature continues to seek common ground on transportation funding. Without a solution, cuts loom for local roads, bridges and Metro bus service – potentially worsening congestion and delaying improvements needed to keep the region moving, according to a press release from the county.
An open house and comment period is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., followed by a moderated panel discussion from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Bellevue City Hall, 450 110th Ave. N.E. Read more
Hazen’s dean of students takes position in Sammamish

Sena Camarata, the dean of students at Hazen High School, will be joining the staff at Skyline High School in Sammamish as an assistant principal on July 1.
Camarata recently earned her principal certification and a graduate degree in educational leadership from the University of Washington.
Skyline Principal Lisa Hechtman said Camarata has been “instrumental in coordinating and leading professional development, helping teachers make their lessons more accessible and rigorous for all students.”
Camarata also teaches science at Hazen. She spent several years working as a biochemist and teaching advanced science classes.
Camarata will replace Andrea McCormick, who is taking the principal’s job at Issaquah High School.

Massage therapist accused of sexual misconduct fired from Issaquah clinic

Days after state health officials suspended the license of Newcastle massage therapist Matthew E. Usher, his current employer, Elements Therapeutic Massage Issaquah, terminated him from its staff.
A charge of sexual misconduct with a patient at Newcastle’s Massage Envy led the state agency to immediately suspend his license.
Usher was criminally charged in King County Superior Court with indecent liberties, after he allegedly reached under the draping and touched a patient’s breast during a December 2012 massage treatment. He pleaded not guilty and a subsequent hearing is scheduled for July 11.
Usher began working at the Elements Therapeutic Massage in January, according to owner Glenda Sue Poletti. At the time of hiring, Usher was properly insured and licensed, she said. Read more
