Issaquah School District hosts party for retiring superintendent

The Issaquah School District is hosting an open house for retiring Superintendent Steve Rasmussen on June 5.
Rasmussen is retiring after more than four decades in education, according to a press release from the district.
The open house is from 4-6 p.m. at the Administration Building, 565 N.W. Holly St. Remarks will begin at 5 p.m.
Associate Superintendent Ron Thiele will take over for Rasmussen beginning July 1.
Newcastle QFC hosts community shred

The Coal Creek Parkway QFC will host a community shred-a-thon from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 1 to benefit Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Residents are encouraged to bring unwanted personal documents for shredding to help curb identity theft, which is the fastest growing form of consumer fraud.
It will cost $5 to shred a grocery bag full of documents, or $10 for an archive box of materials. All of the proceeds will benefit Seattle Children’s Hospital.
Last year, the hospital provided $113.7 million in uncompensated care to families in Washington, Alaska, Montana and Idaho.
The Newcastle QFC is at 6940 Coal Creek Parkway.
Newcastle Running Club announces scholarship winners

Three high school seniors have each been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from the nonprofit Newcastle Running Club.
Awards were given to Liberty High School student Jessica Basi; and Hazen High School students Mikayla Muratore and Fiona La. All three students demonstrated a willingness to give back to their communities and all are college bound to further their education.
Basi will attend the University of Washington; Muratore is going to Western Washington University; and La will enroll at the University of Pennsylvania.
Winners were chosen based on equal parts of community involvement, grade point average, SAT or ACT test scores, financial need and an essay.
To qualify for the scholarships, the high school seniors must live in Newcastle or attend Hazen or Liberty high schools.
The $3,000 in total scholarships was made possible from proceeds resulting from the 2012 Newcastle 5K Run/Walk during Newcastle Days.
Public Health hosts free child car seat workshop

Public Health – Seattle & King County wants to make sure a traveling parent’s precious cargo remains safe and secure with a free child car seat check-up event.
Parents and caregivers can have their child safety seat checked by a certified technician at the Coal Creek Family YMCA May 31 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping children up to two years old in rear facing seats or until they have reached the maximum height and weight limits of the car seat.
Child safety seats reduce fatal injury by 71 percent for infants younger than one year old and by 54 percent for toddlers in passenger cars, according to national research.
The Coal Creek Family YMCA is at 13750 Newcastle Golf Club Road.
Library book sale nets more than $2,000

The Friends of the Newcastle Library raised $2,180 during its three-day book sale, and an extra $247 in cash donations alone.
The organization collected donations of books throughout the year, accumulating more than 130 boxes filled with materials that were briskly sold at the sale.
The money raised from the sale will allow the group to fund extra programs at the Newcastle Library for the next year.

Newcastle Historical Society elects officers

The Newcastle Historical Society elected a new board to lead the organization at its May 2 meeting.
Russ Segner will serve as the group’s president, Vicki Olson is the vice president, Ila Hemm is the secretary, Rich Crispo is the treasurer and Malcolm Lawrence is an added board member.
It is all a part of the group’s effort to increase its presence in the community. The board members will plan new programs for regular meetings and work to educate local residents about the city’s vast, rich history.
