When the semifinalists were announced at the 2013 Miss America pageant in Las Vegas, cutting down the field of 53 to just 15, it appeared that Mandy Schendel’s night was over.

But a surprise twist on the night gave new life to Schendel’s run in the competition, when judges were given the opportunity to add one more semifinalist. Read more

The Renton School District will present proposed boundaries for the district’s new middle school at an upcoming community meeting.

The community meeting will be held at 7 p.m. Jan. 15 at McKnight Middle School, 1200 Edmonds Ave. N.E., Renton. Read more

Celebration launches book about late U.S. Rep. Jennifer Dunn

Leaders plan to gather in Newcastle on Sundayto honor the late Jennifer Dunn, a long-serving representative in Congress for Newcastle and other Eastside communities.

The occasion is the release of “A Woman First: The Impact of Jennifer Dunn” — a book about the trailblazing Republican’s career, life and legacy.

“Jennifer Dunn was a true trailblazer in Washington politics,” Secretary of State Sam Reed said in a statement. “Whether it was becoming Washington’s first female Republican Party chair or attaining a high leadership position in Congress, she reached impressive heights during her career.” Read more

Bellevue to discuss Coal Creek Parkway bridge project at upcoming council meeting

Representatives from the city of Bellevue will present information about the construction of a new bridge that will replace an aging culvert under Coal Creek Parkway at the Jan. 15 Newcastle City Council meeting.

The culvert is located between Southeast 60th Street and Forest Drive Southeast. The project will protect the roadway, improve public safety, provide a new pedestrian walkway and improve fish passage.

Construction is set to begin April 2013 and will require long-term lane closures on the road in 2013 and 2014. Read more

Issaquah and Renton school districts seek new superintendents

Both of the school districts that serve Newcastle are seeking new district leaders after Issaquah Superintendent Steve Rasmussen announced plans to retire at the end of the school year.

In a statement announcing his retirement, Rasmussen said he was proud of the district’s work in his six years at the helm and is excited for the school district’s future. Read more

City honors volunteers

After a year packed full with successful community events and valuable projects enhancing the neighborhood, the city is honoring all the volunteers who made them happen with a Jan. 30 celebration.

Whether you worked on several events throughout the year, or donated just a few hours, the city wants its volunteers to know that the community wouldn’t be the same without them.

The appreciation event, at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, is expected to be filled with treats, fun and a special gift.

In particular, the city thanks the Newcastle Weed Warriors, Newcastle Trails, the  Greater Newcastle Chamber of Commerce and the Public Works Department for their work throughout the year.

Chamber hires part-time executive director

The Greater Newcastle Chamber of Commerce announced that it has hired Imelda Dulcich as its new part-time executive director, in a statement released today.

The executive director is responsible for implementing the policies of the chamber’s board of directors and administering the approved budget.

Dulcich is also expected to provide more opportunities for Newcastle businesses to market their companies with the addition of a blog to the existing website and a greater presence on the chamber’s social media platforms. Read more

Newcastle’s own Mandy Schendel, Miss Washington 2012, will head to Las Vegas on Jan. 2 in preparation for the 2013 Miss America competition.

Schendel will be among 53 national finalists who will vie for the Miss America title.

“The Bachelor” host Chris Harrison and “Dancing with the Stars” co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet will host the event.

Among the judges for the competition are Olympic gymnast McKayla Maroney, dancer Cheryl Burke and television host Mary Hart.

More than 300 community members attended a farewell fashion show Dec. 8, where Schendel gave attendees a sneak peek at the fashions she plans to wear for the telecast.

The competition will be televised Jan. 12 at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, and can be seen at 9 p.m. on ABC.

Hazen wrestlers look to take down pancreatic cancer

Hazen and Highline high schools are hosting Take Down Pancreatic Cancer, a special event at an upcoming wrestling match at 5 p.m. Jan. 11 at Highline High School, 225 S. 152nd St., Burien.

The goal of the event is to spread awareness of the disease, while raising funds that will go toward pancreatic cancer research.

Wrestlers from Hazen, Highline, Oak Harbor and Lynwood high schools are expected to participate.

In 2012, an estimated 43,920 people were diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society.

More than 37,000 people died from the disease.

Proceeds will be donated to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
