Troop 499 to collect Christmas trees for annual fundraiser

Newcastle’s Boy Troop 499 will begin circulating through local neighborhoods at 9 a.m. Jan. 4 to collect Christmas trees from homes for disposal.
The group will go through neighborhoods several times, until 2 p.m., for its annual fundraiser.
Homeowners may place their trees at the curb of their home for pickup. Donations for the Scouts are accepted by placing a Ziploc bag and envelope addressed to Troop 499 at 8042 116th Ave. S.E., Newcastle, WA 98056, on the tree. Donations can also be mailed to that address.
If the troop misses a tree, homeowners can call 206-579-7732 or 206-817-8323 for pickup. Read more

Issaquah, Renton schools closed due to snow

Issaquah and Renton school district students will start their winter break a day early, after district officials announced that schools are closed Dec. 20.
The Issaquah School District initially called for a two-hour delay, but worsening conditions caused them to close schools for the day.

Snow prompts Issaquah School District to delay classes

All Issaquah School District schools are delayed two hours Dec. 20 because of snow and icy conditions that blanketed the area early Friday morning.
Because of the delay, district officials canceled all before-school activities, including morning school-age care, Headstart, morning and afternoon preschool, morning and afternoon kindergarten, and out-of-district transportation.

Newcastle’s snow-and-ice priority map determines which roads get plowed first, numbered in priorities from one to four, with priority one streets representing major arterials.
The snow is coming, possibly. Residents may see those soft, white flakes falling from the sky late Thursday evening into Friday morning, according to weather reports. Read more
Coal Creek Parkway reopens for the season

The city of Bellevue has temporarily re-opened all four travel lanes of Coal Creek Parkway at the dip where Coal Creek flows under the arterial.
These four lanes will remain open until late February 2014. Then, Bellevue’s construction to replace an aging culvert will enter Phase 2, which will again reduce the parkway to two lanes until about October 2014.
The Phase 2, eight-month project entails additional utility relocations, bridge construction, road re-channelization, stream restoration, trail improvements and landscaping.
