Meteorologists issue wind advisory for Puget Sound lowlands

National Weather Service meteorologists issued a wind advisory due to the potential for winds of more than 30 mph and gusts of more than 50 mph.
The advisory — for Issaquah and the East Puget Sound lowlands — is in effect until 1 p.m. Monday.
Forecasters issue a wind advisory if the possibility exists for sustained winds of 30 to 39 mph and gusts of 45 to 57 mph.
The advisory comes as a strong front makes landfall Sunday night and early Monday.
Strong winds can topple trees and cause power outages.
Newcastle runner wins national 50K championship

Newcastle resident Joseph Gray, 28, was the overall winner of the Merrell of Huntington Village Caumsett 50 Kilometer Run on March 4. The run, for the fifth straight year, was the USA Track and Field National Road 50 Kilometer Championship.
A newcomer to the 50 kilometer ultramarathon distance, Gray clocked a winning time of 2 hours, 56 minutes and 43 seconds, which is one minute and 41 seconds shy of Michael Wardian’s course record that was set in 2008.
Wardian came in second during the event with a time of 3:02:55.
Wardian was the runner up at the 2011 IAU 100 Kilometer World Championships and was named USATF’s Ted Corbitt Award winner for Ultra Runner of the Year, while Gray was last year’s USATF Mountain Runner of the Year.
$219 million bond calls for Liberty High School improvements

Voting by mail in the weeks leading up to April 17, roughly 58,000 registered voters in the Issaquah School District will have the chance to decide whether the schools can sell $219 million in bonds to pay for major renovation and maintenance projects throughout the district.
The capital improvement plan presented by district officials includes a wide variety of projects, including replacing several schools, and installing new roofs and carpet at other facilities. The plan was created by a long process that started in early 2011 with meetings of a bond feasibility and development committee. That group made recommendations to Superintendent Steve Rasmussen and the package eventually had to earn the approval of the school board.

Where are sidewalks/pedestrian friendly trails most needed in Newcastle?
I would like to see 116th Avenue Southeast have wide, continuous sidewalks on both sides of the street between Southeast 68th Street and Southeast 88th Street. Both Southeast 68th Street and Southeast 88th Street need continuous sidewalks connecting 116th Avenue Southeast to Coal Creek Parkway. This would establish the “primary” pedestrian grid needed to provide access to Lake Boren Park and our “micro” city center. “Secondary” spurs could be added as needed to connect smaller neighborhoods to this Main Street walkway.

Southeast 89th off of Coal Creek Parkway to 116th Avenue Southeast — it would create a perfect running/walking loop.

Finish linking the sidewalks on the east side of 116th Avenue and then run sidewalks down the north side of Southeast 88th/89th until they reach Coal Creek Parkway. That will offer sidewalks that circumnavigate nearly all of Newcastle.

What do you think of the Lake Boren Townhomes project on the north shore of Lake Boren?

I like the idea of the Lake Boren Townhomes, but am concerned about what the final product will look like. Will it emphasize the waterfront? Will it include a public walkway like downtown Kirkland has in front of its newer lakefront condos? Will it look like dense apartment living with sparse vegetation or like a beautiful lakefront condo with thoughtful and beautiful landscape? I sure hope these were the questions asked during the permitting process.

Hazen drill team to host showcase night March 16

The Hazen High School drill team will host “Just Dance”at 6 p.m. March 16 to raise money to cover a portion of the team’s state competition expenses.
“Our large competition in January was cancelled due to the snow storm, and we are trying hard to earn enough money to get to state later this month,” said coach Kristin Sargent.
The showcase night will take place at the school located at 1101 Hoquiam Ave. N.E. in Renton.
General admission is $5. Students can get in for $3 with an ASB card and children younger than 5 are free.
The event will feature performances by local dance, military, pom and hip hop groups.
