Drunk Driver Causes Head-On Collision
Two drivers were rushed to the hospital with life threatening injuries after a suspected drunk driver traveling eastbound on I-90 crossed the center median and collided head-on with a westbound vehicle near Preston, in King County.
At approximately 12:37 p.m. a Washington State Patrol Trooper was traveling eastbound I-90 just west of the Preston exit and witnessed a silver 2001 Acura RL in front of him drive up and over a dirt median that separates the eastbound and westbound lanes. The silver Acura drove all the way down the hill and continued to drive in the middle westbound lane, traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes. The Acura swerved to the right to avoid colliding with a semi-truck, and in turn collided head-on with a grey 2006 Honda Civic.
The driver of the Acura RL, Janet Bumgardner, a 53 year-old Newcastle resident, and the driver of the Honda Civic, Rachel McNaul, a 29 year-old North Bend resident were both rushed to Harborview Medical Center in critical condition.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the collision. Bumgardner, who has a prior DUI conviction, will be facing charges as a result of the collision.
Troopers and Detectives closed 2 of the 3 westbound lanes for approximately 2 ½ hours while they investigated the scene.
