Mobile phone law now in effect

From interstates to county roads to Newcastle streets, law enforcement officers have started enforcing a state ban on a distracted-driving law meant to prod motorists to hang up — or at least go hands-free — and drive. The law went into effect yesterday.
Drivers now face a $124 fine if officers catch them texting, or with a mobile phone pressed against their ears. The state will require hands-free devices, such as Bluetooth earpieces, for callers talking and driving. Moreover, drivers younger than 18 cannot use wireless devices at all, except in emergencies.

Liberty High School’s graduation is at 2 p.m. Friday at Safeco Field. Graduating senior Ashley Turnidge is the valedictorian, and graduating seniors Alexis Court and Jann Longman will speak.
Purchase tickets to Liberty’s graduation in advance through the school’s bookkeeper or at Safeco Field the day of the ceremony.
Lake Boren Park playground public hearing tonight

The Parks Commission will host a public hearing regarding the new Lake Boren Park playground equipment at its monthly meeting at 6 tonight.
If you are unable to attend, you may e-mail your comments to City Clerk Bob Baker at bobb@ci.newcastle.wa.us by 4 p.m. today.
Those who attend will have the opportunity to speak about the playground equipment, including the timeline of its construction and the features it should include.
City selects band for Fourth of July celebration

The city selected the cover band Shelley & The Curves to perform at the city’s Fourth of July celebration in Lake Boren Park.
Members of the band have played with acts such as Yes, Heart and Tom Jones. Visit the band’s website here.
The band will perform from 8-10 p.m. with fireworks shortly after.
