SR 900 crash injures Newcastle man

A late-night crash left a Newcastle man with serious injuries Saturday after a speeding car hit his pickup from behind.
Washington State Patrol investigators said the accident occurred at about 11:30 p.m. on state Route 900 near 172nd Place Southeast, southwest of Issaquah. Troopers said a 25-year-old Issaquah woman driving a Ford Focus headed eastbound on SR 900 struck the Ford pickup driven by the 35-year-old Newcastle man.
Liberty to host bicycle safety rodeo Saturday

Liberty High School will host a bicycle safety rodeo from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday.
Officials from the King County Sheriff’s Office will be on hand to provide bicycle safety lessons, helmet fittings, low-cost helmets for purchase and an actual bicycle course to practice riding skills.
Bring your bike and helmet to join in on the activities.
City investigates proposal to install off-leash dog park

Newcastle City Council members voted unanimously to investigate possible solutions to the lack of an off-leash dog park in the city at their meeting Tuesday night.
Councilwoman Lisa Jensen was not in attendance, making the vote 6-0.
The direction to the city’s Parks and Recreation Commission, to research the issue grew amid resident concerns over leash laws that will begin to be enforced in coming weeks.
Dogs must be on leashes within the city. To date, city officials and police haven’t enforced the laws.
The announcement came in response to limited incidents of off-leash dogs at Lake Boren Park, city officials said.

Newcastle Elementary School’s sustainability programs win state award

Newcastle Elementary School was the recipient of a $300 grant from the state Department of Ecology given today.
The annual Terry Husseman School Awards program recognizes and rewards schools for their commitment to ongoing sustainable programs, including waste-reduction efforts, creating new environmental awareness programs, and developing and implementing innovative curricula, a press release said.
Newcastle is one of 45 public and private schools from the state to win an award ranging between $150 and $3,150. More than 70 applications were received.
Level-three sex offender moves to Newcastle

Level-three sex offender Joseph Pershing Hemmert has moved to the 7000 block of 122nd Avenue Southeast, according to officials from King County Sheriff’s Office. Level-three sex offender offenders are considered most likely to re-offend.
An open was held May 20 at City Hall to notify the community about Hemmert.
