This year’s Diamond Awards were presented to outstanding members of the community this afternoon at The Golf Club at Newcastle.

In the youth category, awards were presented to Jeff Hansen and John Stiller for their work with Newcastle Weed Warriors, and Neil Chakravarty for his Eagle Scout project, which involved replacing 62 trails sign plates across the city.

The community service award was presented to Parks Commission Vice Chair Koleen Morris, who took the leading role in organizing this year’s Newcastle Days celebration.

The education award was presented to Trent Neugebauer, a fourth-grade teacher at Newcastle Elementary School, who coordinates the annual Amazing Race at the school, which challenges students mentally and physically, and raises money for donations.

The business award was presented to Linda Stemler, from HomeStreet Bank, for her hard work and customer service. Finally, the senior award was presented to Daniel Baker, who spearheaded an improvement project on the May Creek Trail on Sept. 11.

*Mayor John Dulcich also issued a mayor’s award this year, and he presented it to those who helped organize Newcastle Days this year: Morris; parks commissioners Suzi O’Byrne, Craig Belcher and Diane Lewis; Puget Sound Energy Municipal Liaison Manager Angela Wingate; Sweet Decadence owner Sandra Wixon; HTS Audio producer David Harris; Coal Creek Utility District Commissioner Doug Kunkel; and Pam Lee from the Newcastle Historical Society.

Each recipient of the mayor’s award received a $25 gift certificate to The Golf Club and a city of Newcastle pin, which Dulcich described as “coveted.”
