Apply to serve on city planning, parks commissions

Officials want to fill three vacancies each on the Newcastle Planning Commission and Parks Commission.
Newcastle residents 18 years or older can apply for the open positions. The application deadline for both commissions is Aug. 21.
The original deadline was Aug. 4, but city officials moved the deadline due to a shortage of applicants.
Water leak destroys YMCA gym

A water leak destroyed one of the gyms at the Coal Creek YMCA. The facility’s opening will not be delayed, but some preschool and after-school activities will be relocated to the Lake Heights YMCA, 12635 S.E. 56th St., Bellevue, until the floor is repaired. Although the grand opening of the YMCA will not be until Newcastle Days on the weekend of Sept. 11-12, charter members are allowed to begin using the facility today.
Newcastle Police keeps eye on vacationers’ homes for free

Newcastle Police are offering to check up on homes of city residents while they are on vacation.
Officially, the free program is known as Vacation House Check, and through it, police will periodically check on the homes of individuals who are out of town and watch for suspicious activity.
Residents planning to be out of town can go here to submit a request to the police for a Vacation House Check.
Meet City Council candidates at Aug. 6 event

City Council Position 5 candidates Rich Crispo, Larry Betsch and Karin Blakley will attend a meet and greet at Sweet Decadence inside the Newcastle Professional Center on Thursday, Aug. 6, from 6-9 p.m. Residents are encouraged to attend and meet the candidates.
John Jensen, president of the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce, will reward the person who walks the farthest distance to the event with a $10 Sweet Decadence gift certificate — or by buying the winner two glasses of wine that night.
Sweet Decadence is located at 12835 Newcastle Way.
