Ashton Herrild likes to express himself on stage. The 11-year-old Newcastle boy appeared in the Seattle Children’s Theatre production of “Medieval Farces” this summer.

“The play has a lot of slapstick humor that I like,” said Herrild, a sixth-grader at Maywood Middle School.

“Medieval Farces,” a trio of short tales, adapted by Don Fleming and directed by Keni Cohen, took the audience back to medieval times, when actors with few props and sparse settings performed plays to entertain the poor and hungry masses.

Herrild played a shepherd in the play. He has been performing since age 5.

Last year, he played Tinhorn in the Missoula Children’s Theatre’s production of “Wiz of the West,” at Briarwood Elementary School.

When he’s not acting, Herrild plays baseball, basketball or video games. He plans to join the Drama Club at Maywood this fall.

“I love the freedom of acting,” he said. “When the community comes to see you and the light hits you on stage, it’s a feeling I wouldn’t give up for the world.”
