Newcastle volunteers needed for Eastside children’s organization’s fundraiser

Encompass, an independent and non-profit children’s and family-services organization established in 1966 with a mission to nurture children, enrich families and inspire community, is looking for volunteers for two spring fundraisers, including one in Newcastle.
The organization’s “Dream with Me” Spring Gala will be held April 21 at The Golf Club at Newcastle and its SipFest fundraiser will be held May 18 at the Pickering Barn in Issaquah.
Hazelwood PTSA hosts auction at The Golf Club at Newcastle

The Hazelwood Elementary School PTSA will host its spring fundraiser and silent auction at 6:30 p.m. today at The Golf Club at Newcastle.
The event will feature the silent auction, hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar when the doors open with a live auction and dessert dash to follow.
There will be many items to bid on, including fun and creative class projects.
CCUD water, sewer rates to increase in February

Newcastle residents can anticipate increases as they open their water and sewer bills this month after the Coal Creek Utility District Board of Commissioners adopted new water and sewer rates for 2012 at its Jan. 11 meeting.
The new rates take effect this month.
The average single-family household will see their monthly water bill increase $4.48 and their monthly sewer bill increase approximately 80 cents in 2012, according to the district.
Water rates are scheduled to increase 12 percent in 2012 — with more than half of that increase due to the higher cost of water purchased from Seattle Public Utilities.
City Council meeting rescheduled for Jan. 24

After the Newcastle City Council’s Jan. 17 regular meeting was cancelled due to inclement weather, the meeting has been rescheduled to 7 p.m. Jan. 17 at Newcastle City Hall.
The council will discuss the Issaquah School District’s request for a surface water management fee waiver, Comprehensive Plan amendment, and resolutions for updating council rules and the city’s Legislative agenda for 2012, among other business.
The council’s Jan. 20 annual retreat at The Golf Club of Newcastle and the city’s Jan. 18 Planning Commission meeting will also be rescheduled to a future time and date.
Diamond Awards honor community

Members of the Newcastle community who contribute time, energy and service to make the city a better place to live were recognized at the Newcastle Chamber of Commerce’s Diamond Awards on Nov. 10.
Karin Blakley, Diamond Award emcee and chamber board member, said recipients in the event’s youth, education, business, community service and mayor’s choice categories exemplify service and community pride that make Newcastle a great place to call home and do business.
Kent Coburn and Roland Deex were honored with a Diamond Award in the youth category.

Coburn has volunteered at Newcastle Days, and for Arbor Day and various Weed Warrior events since 2008. He plays in Hazen High School’s jazz band and played at Newcastle’s Earth Day event in 2011.
Deex, a Liberty High School student, is a member of the honor society and tutors students before school, and he mentors a Newcastle boy with autism each week through the Athletes for Kids buddy program. During Deex’s Eagle Scout project, he organized service projects to benefit the East May Creek Trail.
Cathy Dean, a first-grade teacher at Hazelwood Elementary School, was awarded the education award for her ability to build good relationships with students that enable them to achieve a strong educational foundation.
Valley Medical Center was honored in the business category. The medical center was recognized for stepping up during tough economic times to become the main sponsor of Newcastle Days.

Newcastle hosts candidates for governor, attorney general

The Eastside Candidate Forum will offer an opportunity for the community to meet the regional candidates for the Washington offices of governor and attorney general.
The free event will be from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 22 in the St. Andrew’s Ballroom at The Golf Club at Newcastle.
Rob McKenna and Jay Inslee, candidates for governor, along with Reagan Dunn and Bob Ferguson, candidates for attorney general, will all speak at the forum.

The event will be Nov. 10 at The Golf Club at Newcastle.
A recipient of a Diamond Award is chosen based on their contribution to the community of Newcastle.
The four award categories include business, youth, community service and education.
Teen injured in golf cart rollover accident

A teenager rolled a golf cart down an eight-foot embankment at The Golf Club at Newcastle at about 6:20 a.m. July 14.
The 17-year-old golf course employee became trapped under the cart, and firefighters and other golf course employees lifted the cart off of the teen, said Lt. Troy Donlin, Bellevue Fire Department spokesman.
The teen was injured and transported to Harborview Medical Center in stable condition. Donlin did not have information about the extent of the teen’s injuries.
David Valdyka, director of marketing at Oki Golf, said he did not have enough details to comment on the size or weight of the cart that pinned the teen.
Concerts in the Park lineup is set

The city has rounded out its Concerts in the Park lineup for the summer.
Lake Boren Park will host six concerts on Wednesdays throughout the summer, beginning July 13. Each concert — beginning at 7 p.m. — will be an hour and a half.
The Golf Course at Newcastle and KeyBank will sponsor the series.
