The city of Newcastle will celebrate Arbor Day with a tree-planting event Oct. 18.
From 10 a.m. to noon, volunteers will dig and plant several honorary trees at Donegal Park on the corner of 123rd Avenue Southeast and Southeast 74th Street.
The city will provide refreshments, tools and gloves. Volunteers can earn community service hours.
Arbor Day is in April, but the city celebrates it now due to better planting conditions. The city’s annual celebration is one of the reasons the Washington State Department of Natural Resources recognizes Newcastle as a Tree City USA community.
