Come and get your radar gun

City residents can learn about the police department’s new citizen-use radar gun program at a demonstration at 10 a.m. Monday.
The demonstration is at City Hall, 13020 Newcastle Way, where two residents will show off their radar gun skills on a city street. Police Chief Melinda Irvine will also be on hand.
Citizens can borrow a radar gun from the department to find out if drivers are really speeding through their neighborhoods. Residents record vehicle speeds and the license plate numbers of violators. Officers will send out warning letters to any drivers observed speeding.
That will help gauge the total number of documented speeders to determine if a neighborhood needs additional patrols. The first volunteer tested it last week and recorded more than 70 speeders in three days.
The warning letters do not carry a fine.
